Portfolium Email Templates

Portfolium is social networking platform company that allows students and recent graduates to showcase their academic work to connect with businesses and employers. This project was intended to improve visual design, user flow, and personalization within Portfolium’s email templates.

This project was completed during my internship at Portfolium in collaboration with the front-end and back-end software development teams. As of 2019, Portfolium was purchased by educational technology company, Instructure, Inc.

Email marketing is consistently one of the most powerful ways of reaching out, connecting, and directing users. The original template was non-engaging, dead-ended, and stylistically outdated. The template did not provide a “follow-up” for users to take additional action steps. There was a disconnect between our users and our services after they left our platform.

To improve the engagement with users in a personal way, follow up with previous transactions on the platform, and provide a way of directing future alternate actions.

Solving For

Students, Job Prospects

We looked at similar email templates via comparative analysis, sketched a bunch of ideas, studied Portfoliums’ branding and style guide, conceptualized higher fidelity iterations, presented an ideal solution, and got feedback from other visual designers and developers on the team. We then proceeded to develop the email templates and implement them.

What We Delivered

We delivered multiple templates that improved in personalization, visual design, and user flow. The email templates are now being used with Portfolium’s present email marketing campaigns. Users now receive personalized emails in their inboxes which allow them to take further action steps. The emails were designed to follow up with an action the user executed on the Portfolium platform. The emails allowed the users to remain engaged with the platform and receive notifications without having to login to the platform.

Things We Improved:

  • Visible CTAs for future actions
  • Better use of white space and spacing between elements
  • Custom personalized text based on user actions
  • Improved visual design that promoted brand consistency
  • Ability for mobile responsiveness
